Carroll Van West is Tennessee State Historian and the director of the Center for Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University. He is the author of numerous books about Tennessee, including Tennessee’s Historic Landscapes and A History of Tennessee Arts. He is the editor of the print and online editions of the Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture. 

NASHVILLE. The Metro Historical Commission Foundation and members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Middle Tennessee chapter) have collaborated with author Carroll Van West to offer the definitive book on the fascinating architectural history of Nashville.

Published in the fall of 2015, Nashville Architecture: A Guide to the City explores in detail places such as the Ryman Auditorium and the Jubilee Hall at Fisk University. More than 250 properties across Nashville and greater Davidson County are included.

The book features more than 150 photographs and historic maps depicting the transformation of Nashville over the past two centuries.

The Metro Historic Commission Foundation supports the work of the MHC and MHC Zoning Commission and works to document history, save and reuse buildings, and make the public more aware of the necessity and advantages of preservation in Nashville and Davidson County. Created in 1966, the commission consists of fifteen citizens appointed by the mayor.
