Traditional style has had a firm hold on Middle Tennessee for many years, but that is changing as communities become more cosmopolitan with people relocating to the area from other parts of the country and as people transition to efficient footprints of urban and suburban condos.

“We have had so many new customers looking for modern contemporary furniture that our entire store is in transition,” says Chuck Feltner, lead designer with ReCreations Home. “For years we have been known as a source for traditional furnishings, and we continue to offer that line for our loyal client base. But we have worked with an influx of new residents moving to the area from places like California and Colorado, particularly millennials and young professionals, and they are all looking for that modern downtown, iconic contemporary look. Mid-century modern is in demand.”

Modern contemporary styles, particularly mid-century originals and reproductions, feature clean lines, exposed wood, rough metals, linen fabrics, leather, and chrome.

“Such contemporary pieces are not going out of style in 10 years,” Feltner says. “This is something you can work with for a very long time.”

Designer Crystal Whitley of Whitley and Co. agrees that Mid-Century modern style is becoming a big trend. “In our area, vintage modern is really popular,” she says, “especially when mixed in with traditional pieces.” For instance, she adds, “we like to contrast white glossy subway tile with reclaimed barn wood floors, or honed white marble with stainless steel; Or, we recommend pairing your grandma’s neoclassical mahogany dining room table with a modern light fixture.”

In order to accommodate the area’s evolving style, Feltner says they are designating a section of their Berry Hill warehouse location and turning it into a modern contemporary showcase featuring many exclusive ReCreation items.
