The Chattanooga-based furniture manufacturer/distributor has moved to a new, highly visible, $5 million mixed-used facility at South Broad and 17th Street, near downtown. The facility offers commercial space and apartment homes, and renovations continue. Smart Furniture is leasing 3,500 square feet in the former auto dealership.

The company was founded by Stephen Culp in 1998, while he was still a law student at Stanford. Smart Shelves were the first product line and Culp began manufacturing and distribution in Chattanooga, not Palo Alto, California. The company has grown and previously had a showroom on the North Shore for the past seven years.

Smart Furniture is also a local distributor for many modern items from designer brands including Herman Miller, Steelcase, Turnstone, Gus Modern, Innovation, Blu Dot, Carl Hansen, Humanscale, HON, Ekornes Stressless and the Danish modern Skovby.
